Bullying among children: how can you spot the signs and take swift action?

Bullying can start at a very young age, including at nursery or school. As it is often subtle, it is important for parents to be able to spot the early signs so they can take swift action.

Signs of bullying in children

There are certain behaviours you should be on the lookout for :

  • a child who is sadder, more anxious or more withdrawn than usual
  • a refusal to go to nursery or school
  • sleep or appetite problems
  • missing or damaged belongings, or unexplained injuries
  • a loss of self-confidence

These changes do not necessarily mean that harassment is taking place, but they should be taken seriously.

What should parents do?

Communication is key. Take the time to:

  • ask open-ended questions about their day
  • listen without judging
  • reassure your child: they are never to blame

If you still have concerns, it is important to:

  • talk to the professionals (caregivers, teachers)
  • take swift action to prevent the situation from getting worse
