Exhausted by parenting? 5 keys to easing fatigue and guilt

Between broken nights and hypervigilance, exhaustion among parents of young children is a reality. At Rockids, we know that to take good care of your child, you first need to maintain your own balance.

Here are 5 keys to making your daily life easier:

1. Aim to be a “good enough parent.”

Forget the image of the perfect parent. Pediatrician Donald Winnicott proved it: children need authentic parents, not superheroes. Accepting your limitations also means letting go of guilt.

2. Rest before logistics

When your baby is asleep, it’s tempting to tidy up the house. Stop. Your nervous system needs rest. If you’re exhausted, 15 minutes of total rest is more valuable than a tidy kitchen.

3. Share the load, not just the tasks

Don’t ask for “help”; delegate complete responsibilities (e.g., managing medical appointments or the daycare bag). Knowing that a task is being handled 100% by the other person really frees up your mind.

4.The “oxygen mask” rule

When flying, you put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. The same applies to parenting. Taking some time out for yourself (exercise, coffee, reading) isn’t selfish—it’s fuel that allows you to be more present afterwards.

5. Be bold enough to hand over the baton

The saying is true: it takes a village to raise a child. Asking for help from friends and family or professionals is a sign of strength, not an admission of failure.
