Between the ages of 2 and 4, children go through a phase of intense self-assertion. This is the age when routines become crucial: they provide a secure framework while reducing power struggles. But how can you remain flexible without losing track?
1. Why is routine their best friend?
At this age, children have no concept of time. Repeating the same routine (meals, bath, story, bedtime) allows them to predict what will happen next. This reduces their anxiety and, by extension, tantrums.
2. Use visual cues
Since they can’t read the time, help them with pictures! A small chart with pictograms allows children to take control of their own schedule.
Rockids tip: Let them move a clothespin or scratch the image once the step is complete. This feeds their need for independence.
3. Prioritize connection over perfection
A caring routine is not a race against time. If your child needs two extra minutes of cuddles after story time, give them that time. This emotional reservoir will make separation (bedtime) much easier.
4. Flexibility: the key to avoiding burnout
The framework should be solid but not rigid. Something unexpected comes up? An outing that drags on? Simply explain: “Tonight is special, so we’ll do a quick version of the routine.” This teaches children that the world is predictable, but also adaptable.
