Self-Confidence: How to Help Your Child Believe in Their Abilities

Celia Bassor

Jul 7, 26

Between school, activities, and relationships with others, children ages 6 to 12 face many challenges. It’s also at this age that they begin to compare themselves more to others and develop their self-image.

Self-confidence isn’t just about succeeding or being the best. Above all, it’s about believing that you’re capable of learning, growing, and overcoming difficulties.

How can you foster self-confidence in your child?

Recognize their efforts

Rather than praising only the results, highlight the hard work and perseverance. A child who understands that their efforts matter will be more motivated to take on new challenges.

Encourage Independence

Let your child complete certain tasks on their own: packing their backpack, putting away their belongings, or taking on small responsibilities at home. Each success reinforces their sense of competence.

Don’t Make a Big Deal Out of Mistakes

Making mistakes is part of learning. Help your child understand that failure isn’t a sign of inability, but an opportunity to improve.

Avoid comparisons

Every child develops at their own pace. Comparing your child to their siblings or classmates can undermine their confidence. It’s better to highlight their personal progress.

Encourage their passions

Sports, music, drawing, dance, or reading: the activities they enjoy allow them to develop their skills and build self-confidence.

The Essential Role of Parents

What parents say has a lasting impact. Simple phrases like “I believe in you,” “You can give it a try,” or “You’ve already succeeded at difficult things” help build a positive self-image.
